One Missed Call

I went into this movie with extremely low expectations and guess what, I was STILL disappointed. There wasn't one redeeming quality in the entire film.

Plot:

The plot was absolutely horrible. Now I wasn't expecting much, how could you? Possessed cell phones or maybe ghosts that travel through them like Pulse (an almost equally shitty movie I might add) but regardless of what I expected it didn't happen. Basically there was NO plot. You get a phone call (and it's not your ring tone, dun dun dun!) thats dated a couple days ahead of time. When you pick it up it says you missed a call, and you hear your voice saying something before you die.

Now that's thin to begin with, but the make it even worse. Some of the victims get killed by an actual spiritual force where the others are "random" accidents. It drags allow at a slow pace (which they try to pick up because the main character dies soon, must hurry and solve it!) but the ending doesn't really answer anything. You understand how everyone was connected but you never get told why, or even left with anything to guess at.

The various sub plots are also completely meaningless and add NOTHING to the story except they make you go why the fuck was this here. The main character was abused by her mother as a child, and her father was aware of this but he hung himself (and she saw him hanging through the peep hole of a door). So now whenever someone knocks on her door she pauses before it, slowly looks at the peep hole and thinks back. Uh, who the fuck cares? She does this numerous times, but this adds nothing to the movie and other then the flashback scene of her father hanging IS IRRELEVENT. Her fathers death its self is irrelevent and has nothing to do with anything other then to maybe "scare" us with the death.

She also receives various letters from her mother, assumed apologies, which she rips up because they no longer talk after the abuse. Like the father, this has NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING. It might have made sense had the main plot followed the logical route and been about a mother/ daughter thing but at the end it didn't making this A WASTE OF SCREEN TIME.

Script:

Whoever wrote this, you're fire. It's supposed to be a horror movie and yet the lines are so pathetic it becomes a comedy.

"What if they never found her body and her spirit is trapped in there *whispering* and she travels through cell phones....attacking people"

Oh god no, the horror! Are you serious?

Characters:

Pick up a piece of paper on your desk, there's most of the characters. Due to the film being only 85-90 minutes there wasn't much time for us to get to know the characters thus creating a lack of caring. Other then the main character and the cop we really don't get to see anything. We see them at a party for a couple minutes, then at a funeral but they could be any random person as they are not important.

Acting:

Horrible. The main character sees one of her male friends get impaled by a metal bar right in front of her and all she does is gasp and looked slightly surprised. Gee I don't know about you but I might be sad, scared, you know something? Another friend falls in front of a train and once again she looks slightly surprised and then "meh, I got more". Nice.

Horror:

Standard low quality scares here. The classic dramatic music followed by eerie closet/ room/ hallway that ends with something jumping out and loud music from the speakers. Yea, boo.

Overall:

I give it a 2/10. There was NOTHING average about it. The low rating limited what could be shown in the death sequence getting rid of any "shock" value, and everything else was just bad. Now I heard the Japanese version was supposed to be better, but after seeing this I don't know how it couldn't be.

***If you plan on seeing this piece of shit quit reading, if not continue and see why it was so lame***

Why exactly was the plot lame? How did they ruin possible "ok" story?

It turns out that the call originated from some lady in a nursing home (we think at first) who was talking to the detectives sister (who was a psychologist) who spent time in school with the first victim, so on and so force. Well she's not there, they look up info on her and find out she had two daughters. One died from an asthma attack and the other one is missing with her mother. She had been in hospital for various thing ranging from burns to cuts 9 times in two months so they assumed the mother was hurting her. While exploring the house the cop finds a disk that was from a nanny cam in the girls bedroom, but now the camera is gone.

Yadada the hospital she was in burned down and she now lives in foster care because the mother is missing. They visit the girl, she doesn't talk but is holding a bear that makes the ringtone sound. The "genius" main character snoops around and thinks the mother may have died in the fire and they just didn't find her body. There's an hour left before her death so she goes there, the cop comes after.

Well after some random spirit attacks she finds the old ladies corpse in an air duct. You see a bunch of wires and shit to so it's natural to assume that she caused the fire with the electrical system and accidently got killed, why else would have been in the duct? And she's holding a cell phone! Anyway she comes to life, crawls onto the girl and just lies there. Cop finds the girl gets her out, other police come get the corpse blah blah.

The girl thinks she's safe cause she passed the time she was supposed to die so just goes to bed alone. Meanwhile the cop went to the nursery to tell the girl her mom's dead, but she's asleep. Cop sees a picture on the wall she drew as he's leaving that has the bear, for some reason he takes the bear and rips it open to find a disk which he watches with the care person who works there.

Turns out the bear was the nanny cam, and what we see is the sister (who died from asthma) grabbing the other sister and cutting her arm with a knife. The mother comes in, sees whats going on and pushes the girl away and grabs the one who was cut and leaves, locking the other one in. This is when the girl has the asthma attack and dies. It wasn't the mother being abusive, it was the sister.

Ok, now that we are caught up this is where the problems start. If there was a camera in there (which obviously the mother put in/ was aware of) WHY DID SHE NOT KNOW THE GIRL WAS DOING THIS AND IT WASN'T ACCIDENTS? She was shocked, but why? Why have a fucking camera runnng if you don't watch what it is filming?

And seeing how it was the sister the whole mother/daughter abuse sub plot that started with the main character becomes non existent and irrelevant.

So the daughter was dying she phoned her mom, mom phoned psychologist, etc that's how they all died. BUT WHY WAS THE GIRL KILLING EVERYONE, SHE WENT FROM HURTING HER SISTER TO FUCKING MURDERING RANDOM PEOPLE AS A GHOST??

Oh, and the best part. Why the fuck was the mother in the air duct? Clearly she didn't start the fire because she wasn't doing the abuse so the wires just happened to run through there. Was she tired and couldn't find a bed so she thought "hmm, let's climb into an air duct and sleep here."?

And at the very end the ghost daughter actually appears to attack the main character, but then the spirit of here dead mom appears, strangles her, and they both disappear.

Now if this could happen at any time WHY DIDN'T THE DAUGHTER JUST KILL EVERYONE LIKE THIS? SHE BLEW THE FUCKING HOUSE OPEN, STABBED A DUDE IN THE EYE YET SHE COULDN'T JUST WALK AROUND FUCKING KILLING EVERYONE ELSE?

And if the mom could just strangle her and she'd stop, WHY WAIT LIKE 10 FUCKING PEOPLE? NICE ONE!
