The Call of Cthulhu

Based on the story by H.P. Lovecraft, a dying professor leaves his great nephew a collection of documents that contain information about his learning and investigations of the Cthulhu Cult. Piece by piece he puts together why these "stories" were so important. The movie was filmed in 2005 but was made to look like a 1920's movie. It is in black and white and a silent film, with title cards when the characters speak.

Plot:
As the nephew reads the documents we are brought back in time to witness what was going on, from when his great uncle first found the Cthulhu idol, to the incident in the swamp, all the way to the city of R'lyeh.

Special Effects:
Plenty of special effects are present such as stop motion. Very well done for a film that was meant to look very old.

Gore/Horror:
No gore is present at all, but it is not the kind of story that requires the use of it. Nor is it very scary, simply because it was supposed to look like a 1920's movie that essentially the scariest part (Cthulhu himself) looked like a large toy the one time we get to see his full form.

Acting:
The movie is blessed with terrific actors who all seem like they genuinely care about the portrayal of the story. Believable and full of emotion.

Overall:
If you have read the story it would probably increase your enjoyment of this film but it is in no way mandatory. Arguably the best of the Lovecraft film adaptations, everyone should see if they are a fan of his work and/or like old style cinema. At 45 minutes it was just long enough so it didn't drag at all, although it left me wanting more.

8/10
